Juventus are set to begin pre-season training with a significant number of players deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Luciano Spalletti, according to reports in Tuttosport. The club is looking to reshape the squad, but high wages are complicating potential departures.
While the players are considered not integral to Juventus’s progression, many would likely be starters for mid-table teams, however their current contracts present a significant obstacle to outgoing transfers. The situation is further complicated by the fact that several of those facing the exit door are still considered valuable members of the squad, making decisions difficult for Spalletti.
Goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio is reportedly still the first choice despite the club seeking a long-term upgrade, and will feature in early friendlies. On the defensive side, Joao Mario is attracting interest from Fiorentina and Bologna, while Federico Gatti is a target for Napoli. Daniele Rugani, recently returned from a loan spell at Fiorentina – a deal which did not trigger a permanent move due to a lack of playing time – is awaiting a decision from Spalletti, who may retain him for his experience. Left-back Cabal’s future is uncertain following a difficult Champions League campaign.
In midfield, Arthur could be offered a return to Gremio, while Douglas Luiz has been granted a further opportunity to prove his worth, despite inconsistent form. The attacking options facing potential exits include Zhegrova, David, and Openda, all remnants of the previous management under Comolli. The club is actively seeking alternatives for these players, but first needs to secure departures, potentially through wage contributions or loan deals. Milik, who was previously considered for a contract termination, will be given a chance to demonstrate improved fitness.
The report suggests the atmosphere at the JHotel was subdued upon players’ arrival, indicating the awareness of the impending changes. However, the club is keen to maintain a positive outlook as they begin preparations for the new season.
