Gladbach's Reitz to retain captaincy despite Leipzig transfer backlash
Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Eugen Polanski has confirmed that Rocco Reitz will remain club captain for the remainder of the season, despite fan protests following confirmation of his summer transfer to RB Leipzig. Polanski told Bild that the decision, made by the team's players before the season began, will stand for the final five Bundesliga matches, starting with Sunday's fixture against Mainz.
The midfielder's impending move to Leipzig was confirmed a month ago, a development that has provoked a significant negative reaction from sections of the Gladbach support. During last week's 1-0 defeat to Leipzig at Borussia-Park, fans displayed banners declaring they did not want Reitz to continue as captain, highlighting the strained relationship between the player and the stands.
Polanski defended the 22-year-old's leadership qualities and dismissed the influence of the fan protests on team decisions. "Rocco was elected before the season by the team. And he is a good captain – he leads from the front, not just on the pitch. And Rocco will continue to do that in the last five games," the coach said. "They (the fans) also have to understand that we do not base such decisions on banners like these."
Reitz, a product of Gladbach's youth academy, has been a key figure in the team's midfield this season. His energetic performances and development into a regular starter made the announcement of his departure to a direct Bundesliga rival particularly jarring for supporters. The transfer represents a significant step in the player's career, moving to a club consistently competing in European competition.
The situation presents a complex challenge for the final weeks of the campaign, with Gladbach sitting in mid-table. Polanski's insistence on maintaining Reitz's captaincy is aimed at preserving squad unity and stability on the pitch, even as the player prepares for his exit. For Reitz, the task is now to navigate the remaining fixtures while carrying the armband, balancing his commitment to his current club with his planned future at Leipzig.
