Stade Rennais have completed the signing of forward Eliezer Mayenda from Sunderland for a fee of €20 million, plus bonuses, the French club confirmed on Sunday. The 21-year-old Spaniard has signed a five-year contract with Rennes, committing his future to the club until 2031. This marks the fourth professional club of Mayenda’s burgeoning career, following spells with Sochaux, Sunderland, and Hibernian.
Mayenda arrives at Rennes with a relatively modest goalscoring record, having featured for Sunderland across three seasons. He has also represented Spain at under-21 level, earning nine caps and scoring twice. The move to Rennes represents a significant step up for the young forward, joining a club competing in Ligue 1 and offering European football.
According to L’Équipe, Mayenda expressed his happiness at joining Rennes, describing Ligue 1 as an “underestimated” league. He will be looking to make an immediate impact in France, though he faces competition for a starting position. Rennes already boast a proven goalscorer in Esteban Lepaul, who finished as the top scorer in Ligue 1 last season with 21 goals.
The transfer window has been active for Rennes, with Mayenda becoming their fourth signing of the summer. The club is clearly bolstering its attacking options ahead of the new season, aiming to improve upon their previous campaign. Mayenda’s arrival provides Rennes with additional depth and competition in forward areas, potentially increasing their goal threat and overall squad quality. The club will hope he can quickly adapt to the French league and contribute to their ambitions.
