Borussia Dortmund’s attempt to sign Said El Mala from 1. FC Köln has hit a snag, with their recent offer reportedly rejected due to unrealistic bonus clauses, according to both Bild and Sky Germany.
Dortmund’s proposal was valued at up to €44 million, comprised of a €34 million guaranteed fee and a potential €10 million in add-ons, but fell short of Köln’s €50 million valuation of the 19-year-old. The structure of the offer, specifically the bonus conditions, reportedly caused considerable friction between the two Bundesliga clubs.
Sky Germany reports that the proposed bonuses were contingent on El Mala achieving individual accolades considered highly improbable, including being named Bundesliga Player of the Season, finishing as the league’s top goalscorer, and receiving a nomination for the Ballon d’Or. Köln officials viewed these targets as deliberately difficult and indicative of a lack of serious intent from Dortmund.
As a result, the club are now reportedly unwilling to entertain further offers from Dortmund, expressing dissatisfaction with both the offer’s financial terms and the manner in which it was presented. This development complicates Dortmund’s pursuit of the young forward, who has emerged as a key target during the transfer window.
Despite interest from abroad, including AS Roma and Brentford, El Mala and his family are believed to prefer a move within the Bundesliga. This preference gives Dortmund a potential advantage, although they will need to revise their offer to meet Köln’s demands. RB Leipzig have also been linked with a move for the player, but are similarly hesitant to match Köln’s asking price.
El Mala has quickly established himself as a promising talent in the Bundesliga, demonstrating impressive dribbling skills and an eye for goal. His performances for Köln have attracted attention from several top clubs, making him one of the most sought-after young players in Germany.
