Rio Mavuba Takes Permanent Managerial Role at Bordeaux
Rio Mavuba has been appointed as the permanent head coach of Ligue 2 side Girondins de Bordeaux, the club confirmed on Monday. The former French international, who had been serving as interim manager, has signed a contract until the end of the current season following a positive start to his tenure. The move comes after Bordeaux parted ways with their previous manager earlier this month, with Mavuba immediately installed as the temporary solution.
Mavuba's first match in permanent charge resulted in a 2-1 victory away to Locminé in the Coupe de France this past Saturday. Goals from Abou Ba and Tidyane Diagouraga secured the win, providing an immediate boost. After the match, Mavuba emphasized the team's spirit, telling reporters, as cited by Girondins4Ever, "Where we wanted to be reassured was in the state of mind. And on that, they were tops." He acknowledged room for improvement but praised the players' investment and application.
The 40-year-old steps into his first major senior managerial role after a distinguished playing career that included over 250 appearances for Lille and 13 caps for France. Since retiring, he has worked within Bordeaux's youth academy, giving him a deep understanding of the club's structure and current squad. His appointment represents a shift towards a club legend stabilizing the team during a challenging period in the second division.
Bordeaux currently sit mid-table in Ligue 2, with promotion to the top flight appearing a distant prospect for this campaign. The club's immediate focus will be on consolidating their position and building a foundation for the future under Mavuba's leadership. His primary task will be to improve consistency and steer the team clear of any relegation concerns, a situation the historic club is unaccustomed to facing.
The decision to appoint Mavuba permanently suggests the Bordeaux hierarchy values continuity and a familiar presence in the dugout. His knowledge of the players and the club's culture likely weighed heavily in the choice. The coming months will serve as an extended audition for Mavuba to prove he can translate his respected playing career into a successful managerial one at the highest levels of the French game.
