Roberto De Zerbi takes charge at Tottenham with survival the immediate aim
Roberto De Zerbi will take charge of Tottenham Hotspur for the first time this weekend, tasked with the immediate goal of keeping the club in the Premier League. The Italian manager was confirmed as the new Spurs head coach on a deal running until the end of the season, with the club one point above the relegation zone with seven games remaining. De Zerbi, who previously managed Olympique de Marseille, takes over a side that has won just one of its last ten league matches.
De Zerbi, who was appointed after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, will lead the team against Sunderland on Sunday. In his first press conference, he acknowledged the scale of the challenge. "I have no time to dwell on principles or build-up play; I need to bring organisation with and without the ball," De Zerbi explained. "What I want to do, what I want to accomplish, is to forge the character of this team. The right mentality, the courage to play and to attack. That is the DNA of this club and this team, to find a way to score goals. On that, I can transmit my philosophy."
The 44-year-old Italian, who has also managed at Shakhtar Donetsk and Sassuolo, inherits a squad that has struggled for consistency and defensive solidity. The club confirmed his appointment on a short-term contract, with a reported option to extend should he keep Spurs in the top flight. The club currently sits just one point above West Ham United, who occupy the final relegation place.
De Zerbi was direct about his ambitions and his belief in his own readiness for the challenge. "I think that to keep Spurs in the Premier League, it must be clear to everyone that I want to work in the Premier League. I think I deserve to work in the Premier League," he stated. "Whatever happens, if I sign a contract in April, I have to be ready to stay next season no matter what. My focus is on Sunderland and the other six games. But my idea is very clear."
The Italian manager, known for an intense, possession-based style, faces a daunting fixture list, with matches against several top-half sides in the run-in. However, he dismissed the notion that he is a short-term appointment, emphasizing his long-term vision. He stressed that his immediate focus is on instilling a resilient and attacking mindset. "The DNA of this club and this team is to find the back of the net, to score. On that point, I can transmit my philosophy," he added.
The club's supporters have expressed mixed reactions to the appointment, with some fan groups having voiced opposition to his hiring, but the hierarchy has moved decisively to secure a manager with a reputation for building cohesive, attacking teams. De Zerbi's immediate task is to secure the points needed to ensure Premier League survival, a task he and the club are treating with the utmost seriousness as they face a critical period in the club's recent history.
