Roberto Martínez has stepped down as manager of the Portugal national team following their elimination from the 2026 World Cup round of 16 against Spain, losing 1-0.
The Catalan coach announced his decision at a post-match press conference, citing the “end of a cycle” and stating that continuing without winning the World Cup held no appeal. He expressed immense pride in his time with the team and acknowledged the incredible support received from the Portuguese people.
Martínez took charge of the Portuguese squad in January 2023, achieving success in the Nations League, defeating Spain in the final after a 2-2 draw and a 5-3 penalty shootout victory. His overall record included 32 wins, 6 draws, and 7 losses.
Despite a positive statistical record, Martínez struggled to fully harness the potential of a talented squad featuring players like Cristiano Ronaldo, who now sees his international career end in disappointment. Major tournament performances were underwhelming, with a quarter-final exit at Euro 2024 against France preceding this recent World Cup setback.
There has been speculation linking Martínez with a role at Al-Nassr, however, that position appears to be filled. His departure leaves the Portuguese Football Federation searching for a new manager to lead a team still capable of competing at the highest level.
This marks the end of a relatively short but eventful tenure for Martínez, who will be remembered for delivering a Nations League title but ultimately falling short of expectations in the World Cup and European Championships.
