Manchester City midfielder Rodri has expressed a strong desire to join Real Madrid, though a transfer is currently hampered by a disagreement within the Spanish club’s hierarchy, according to reports. The 30-year-old recently enjoyed a successful World Cup campaign with Spain, winning the Golden Ball after La Roja’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final.
Rodri’s current contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire next summer, and he has not responded to a “mega offer” from Manchester City for an extension, as reported by Matteo Moretto. The player is reportedly keen to return to Spain, specifically favouring a move to Real Madrid following Pep Guardiola’s departure from City.
Despite previously playing for Atletico Madrid, Rodri’s preferred destination is Real Madrid. However, president Florentino Perez initially decided against pursuing the midfielder ahead of the World Cup, reportedly due to Manchester City’s firm stance that they would prefer to lose him on a free transfer in 2027 rather than sell him for a reduced fee this summer.
Fabrizio Romano and Moretto both report that Perez has not altered his position, currently ruling out a move for Rodri. Nevertheless, a faction within the Real Madrid board is now advocating for his signing after being impressed by his performances at the World Cup. Moretto suggests Perez may reconsider if persuaded by those within the club pushing for the transfer.
Real Madrid are currently “internally reconsidering” their options, weighing up the feasibility of signing Rodri alongside manager Jose Mourinho’s priority of strengthening the defence. Any move for Rodri would likely necessitate the sale of a current midfielder, a complicated prospect given Aurelien Tchouameni’s recent contract extension and the unwillingness of Eduardo Camavinga to leave, while Federico Valverde is considered unsellable. The situation remains fluid, but Rodri’s desire to join Real Madrid and the internal debate within the club could yet lead to a transfer.
