Manchester City midfielder Rodri has indicated his desire to join Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, according to reports in the Spanish media. Journalist Sergio Valentin, writing for Radio Marca, claims that Rodri wants to move to the Bernabeu and play under new manager Jose Mourinho.
Valentin reported on July 18 that Real Madrid have altered their plans to pursue Rodri, with Mourinho specifically requesting a midfielder of his profile. The club has reportedly informed Rodri they will attempt to secure his signature after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. This comes after initial reports from TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey on July 14, which indicated Real Madrid’s interest in a deal for the Spain international in the summer of 2026.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is believed to be a key driver of the interest, reportedly seeking a midfielder with the qualities of a player lost with the aging of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. However, Manchester City are keen to retain Rodri, with new manager Enzo Maresca viewing him as a crucial player for the upcoming season. The club are planning contract talks with the 30-year-old following his participation in the World Cup.
Rodri himself has acknowledged the possibility of a move, stating he will address his future after the World Cup final. Speaking to AS, he said, “Right now…thinking about this, I’ve got a contract with my club, and it’s something I’ll want to sort out when it’s all over.” He added that his performance in the tournament will influence his decision. Rodri has been a pivotal figure for Spain throughout the competition, and will feature in the final against Argentina on Sunday. He joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and has become a mainstay in their midfield, winning multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League.
