AS Roma are set to appoint Tony D’Amico as their new sporting director, according to reports from Corriere dello Sport. The move comes after Gian Piero Gasperini agreed to become Roma’s manager in the summer of 2025, continuing a trend of club personnel exchange between Italian sides.
D’Amico recently departed Atalanta, where he was replaced by Cristiano Giuntoli. He is awaiting final approval from his former club before officially joining Roma, where he will succeed Frederic Massara. His arrival is expected to be crucial in securing contract extensions for key players Paulo Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini, whose current deals expire on June 30th.
D’Amico has built a reputation for shrewd transfer business, particularly during his time at Atalanta. He joined the club in 2022 and was instrumental in the signings of Rasmus Højlund and Ademola Lookman, who were subsequently sold for a combined €115 million, according to Transfermarkt. Prior to Atalanta, he held a similar role at Hellas Verona starting in 2016.
D’Amico’s playing career was spent in the Italian lower leagues, featuring for clubs such as Cavese, Foggia, and Empoli. However, it is his work as a director that has garnered significant attention within Italian football, with many comparing his recruitment strategies to those favoured by players of the Football Manager video game. He will be rejoining a team competing in the Champions League, following Roma’s third-place finish in Serie A and their Europa League triumph under Gasperini. This appointment is expected to provide stability and a clear transfer strategy as Roma look to build on their recent successes.
