AS Roma have initiated contact with Chelsea regarding a possible transfer for forward Alejandro Garnacho, according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla. The Serie A club are reportedly keen on the 21-year-old, viewing his profile as a good fit for their ambitions following qualification for the Champions League.
Garnacho joined Chelsea last year from Manchester United for a fee of €46.2 million, but has struggled to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge. Despite scoring eight goals in total, the majority came in domestic cup competitions against lower-league opposition. He managed only one Premier League goal during his debut season with the Blues.
The Argentine international has seen his career trajectory stall in recent seasons, falling out of favour with both Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and failing to earn a place in Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad. His underwhelming performances and lack of popularity with Chelsea supporters have led the club to consider offers for the player.
Chelsea are reportedly open to recouping a portion of the fee they paid for Garnacho, and have been linked with West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville as a potential replacement. The club will allow new manager Xabi Alonso to assess Garnacho during pre-season before making a final decision on his future. Roma are interested in both a loan and a permanent deal, contingent on financial feasibility. The Italian side are also pursuing Marseille forward Mason Greenwood, and could potentially sign both players if their budget allows.
Roma’s interest in Garnacho is separate from their pursuit of Greenwood, indicating a desire to strengthen their attacking options ahead of a return to Champions League football. Chelsea’s willingness to consider offers for Garnacho suggests a potential reshaping of their forward line under Alonso.
