AS Roma are intensifying their pursuit of Mason Greenwood, potentially offering Manchester United a further £21.5 million from his sale. The move comes after United finalised the permanent transfer of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli for approximately £38 million.
Greenwood rebuilt his career with Marseille following his departure from Manchester United in 2024, scoring 20 goals in the most recent campaign. However, reports suggest internal issues at the French club have prompted a potential exit this summer. Roma have reportedly identified Greenwood as their top target, and are prepared to push for a deal, with Marseille setting an initial asking price of around £43 million.
Manchester United initially sold Greenwood to Marseille for approximately £26 million, including a 50% sell-on clause which would see them benefit from a significant portion of any future transfer fee. The club are actively looking to generate funds through player sales to support a squad overhaul ahead of their return to the Champions League, with a midfield rebuild a top priority, having already agreed a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva.
Greenwood’s time at Manchester United ended after facing charges relating to attempted rape and assault, which were later dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses. His move to Marseille allowed him to resume his playing career, and a transfer to Roma would continue his progression in a major European league. Atletico Madrid and Fenerbahce have also previously expressed interest, suggesting Marseille are likely to receive strong offers for the forward.
The sale of both Hojlund and potentially Greenwood would provide United with valuable funds to invest in new signings, as they aim to strengthen multiple positions within the squad this summer. The club are also linked with potential additions in attack and defence, indicating a busy transfer window is anticipated.
