Roma are focusing on Tony D’Amico and Sean Sogliano as potential replacements for current director of sport Frederic Massara, according to reports in Italy. The search comes as the club prepares for the arrival of new manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
Roma initially pursued Giovanni Manna, the departing sporting director of Atalanta, but face strong competition from Milan for his signature. Ryan Friedkin, a key figure at the club, is reportedly working to finalize a decision before returning to the United States. Massara is continuing his duties professionally in the interim.
D’Amico previously worked with Gasperini at Atalanta from 2022 until last summer, and a strong rapport exists between the two. Despite reports of occasional disagreements, the relationship is considered positive, reflective of Gasperini’s demanding managerial style. However, Milan are also interested in D’Amico as they seek a replacement for Igli Tare. D’Amico’s departure from Atalanta was recently confirmed by Luca Percassi.
Sogliano is another leading candidate, recently relegated from Serie A with Verona. He was contacted by Roma in recent days and finds the offer appealing, offering him continued employment in the Italian top flight. Sogliano also has a prior connection with Gasperini, having worked together at Genoa during the latter stages of Gasperini’s tenure there, from December 2015 to June 2016.
Roma have also considered other profiles, including Ramon Planes, currently with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, Cristiano Giaretta, presently at Pafos in Cyprus, and Matteo Tognozzi, at Rio Ave in Portugal. A decision is expected soon, potentially following Roma’s final Serie A match of the season against Verona, with an official announcement to follow shortly after.
