Roma are increasingly likely to appoint Tony D’Amico as their new sporting director, with a strong rapport between D’Amico and current Roma manager Daniele Gasperini driving the potential move. The two have a long-standing professional relationship, dating back to their time together at Atalanta from 2022 to 2025, where they oversaw a period of significant success including winning the Europa League in 2024 and the signing of Ederson.
D’Amico and Gasperini initially connected professionally in Bergamo, but their history extends further back to Pescara, where Gasperini played and a young D’Amico would observe his training sessions. This shared history fostered a deep understanding and mutual respect, despite occasional disagreements. According to reports, Gasperini has actively recommended D’Amico to Roma’s ownership, the Friedkin group, as his preferred candidate for the role.
During their three years at Atalanta, D’Amico, alongside Gasperini, built upon the club’s existing strengths. They successfully integrated players like Ederson, and were instrumental in the development and subsequent sale of Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United for €74 million. The pair also oversaw the arrivals of players like Bellanova and Retegui, as well as the sale of Koopmeiners to Juventus for over €60 million including bonuses. This demonstrated an ability to both identify talent and generate significant revenue through player sales.
Sources indicate that D’Amico brought trusted colleagues with him to Atalanta, including Riccardo Del Vescovo, the team doctor who previously worked at Roma, and communication manager Andrea Anselmi, forming a close-knit group that contributed to the club’s success. The positive working relationship between D’Amico and Gasperini, characterized by a willingness to accommodate the manager’s requests while maintaining his own autonomy, is seen as a key factor in Roma’s pursuit. The appointment could signal a period of stability and strategic alignment at the club, with a manager and sporting director already possessing a proven track record of collaboration.
