Roma are reportedly interested in signing Mason Greenwood from Marseille, with the Italian club hoping to capitalize on the French side’s financial difficulties. According to Italian publication La Repubblica, Roma see Marseille’s need to raise funds as a significant opportunity to acquire the forward at a reduced price.
Marseille finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season and missed out on Champions League qualification, denying the club a substantial financial windfall. This has led to pressure on the club’s new president, Stéphane Richard, to sell players to satisfy France’s financial regulatory body, the DNCG. Greenwood, currently Marseille’s highest valued player, is seen as a potential asset to be moved on.
Greenwood joined Marseille last summer after his loan spell with Getafe ended, and quickly became a key player for the club, finishing as their second-highest scorer in Ligue 1. Prior to his move to France, the forward spent his youth career at Manchester United, making over 120 appearances for the club before his departure. His time at United was brought to an abrupt end following serious off-field allegations, which were later dropped.
Marseille’s newly appointed sporting director, Grégory Lorenzi, has acknowledged that Greenwood’s future is under consideration. Speaking to L’Équipe, Lorenzi stated that Greenwood is “part of the players who are the subject of great reflection,” adding that any potential opportunity would be carefully evaluated, taking into account the positions of both the club and the player. A move to Roma would allow Greenwood to continue playing regular first-team football, while simultaneously alleviating Marseille’s financial pressures. The transfer could also provide Gian Piero Gasperini with a potent attacking option as he looks to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.
