Romelu Lukaku has made an exploratory approach to AC Milan as he prepares to leave Napoli this summer, according to Italian media reports. The Belgian striker, currently under contract with Napoli until 2027, is expected to depart following a breakdown in his relationship with coach Antonio Conte and the club's hierarchy. Sources indicate Lukaku has sent a message to Milan's leadership inquiring about a potential role at the San Siro.
The 32-year-old forward has a well-documented connection to Milan, having played for city rivals Inter across two separate spells. Lukaku has previously been linked with the Rossoneri during periods of uncertainty, and he is known to hold a strong affection for the city itself. His departures from Inter in 2021 and 2023 were driven by financial considerations and a perceived lack of importance under coach Simone Inzaghi, rather than any dissatisfaction with his surroundings.
Milan's search for a center-forward aligns with this potential opportunity. Coach Massimiliano Allegri has consistently requested a physical striker, having missed out on targets like Dusan Vlahovic, Rasmus Hojlund, and Artem Dovbyk last summer. The club attempted short-term fixes in January with bids for Niclas Fullkrug and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Allegri has reiterated to technical director Geoffrey Moncada and advisor Walter Sabatini that he expects at least one new striker for next season.
The club's current shortlist is reported to include Alexander Sorloth of Atletico Madrid, Goncalo Ramos of Paris Saint-Germain, and longer-term interests in Vlahovic and Robert Lewandowski. Other profiles like Nicolas Jackson, Mateo Retegui, and Moise Kean have also been noted. While Lukaku's name is not officially on that list, club officials are reportedly considering the possibility, especially if Allegri is to be furnished with two primary striking options.
Significant obstacles remain, however. Lukaku is coming off a difficult season plagued by injuries, and his high-profile personality presents a specific management challenge. A recent social media post, where he appeared to criticize the Napoli environment by sharing a quote about "not having fun," underscored the fractured relationship. Napoli, who signed him for 30 million euros in 2024, have already amortized a significant portion of that fee, which could affect the financial structure of any deal.
His most likely destinations are currently thought to be clubs in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, or the United States. Yet, the enduring pull of Milan and the Rossoneri's need for a proven Serie A scorer leave the door open for a surprising third act in the city for Lukaku. Any move would represent a major shift in the striker's career trajectory and a significant statement of intent from Milan's transfer team.
