Cristian Romero is in advanced discussions to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with Inter Milan emerging as the frontrunners to secure his signature. Talks between the Serie A club and Tottenham are set to resume next week, according to sources close to the negotiations.
The 28-year-old Argentina international has spent five seasons with Spurs, becoming a key figure in the team, and has reportedly indicated his openness to a move. Inter Milan have identified Romero as a priority target, temporarily pausing pursuit of other defensive options while they attempt to reach an agreement with both the player’s representatives and Tottenham.
Spurs are seeking a fee of around €50 million (£43 million, $57 million) for the centre-back, whose contract runs until 2029, giving them a strong negotiating position. The club have already bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke, suggesting they are prepared to allow Romero to depart if their valuation is met.
While Inter currently lead the race, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid also retain an interest in Romero. The player has previously expressed a preference for a move to Spain, and Barcelona’s potential sale of a current centre-back could open the door for a move to La Liga. Atlético Madrid have long admired Romero’s aggressive style and leadership qualities.
Romero’s performances for Argentina, including a strong showing this summer, have further increased his market value. With Tottenham entering a new era under the Lewis family and manager Roberto De Zerbi, the club appear willing to part ways with established players like Romero. Should he leave, James Maddison is expected to be appointed as the new Tottenham captain.
