Rüdiger criticises Real Madrid errors after Champions League defeat
Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has delivered a frank assessment of his team's performance following their 2-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. Speaking to Movistar+ after the match at the Santiago Bernabéu, the German centre-back attributed the loss to costly individual mistakes from the Spanish champions.
Rüdiger pinpointed the immediate concession of a goal after half-time as a critical moment. "We came back onto the pitch in the second half and immediately conceded a goal," he said. He emphasised that the team was aware of the dangers of losing possession cheaply at the highest level, yet it happened anyway. The defender was blunt in his summary, stating that Real Madrid "committed two errors on the two goals, they were two gifts," referring to strikes from Bayern's Harry Kane and an own goal forced by Leroy Sané.
Despite a late goal from Kylian Mbappé offering a lifeline for the second leg in Munich, Rüdiger expressed frustration with his side's wastefulness in front of goal. Real Madrid managed 20 shots but only found the net once. "We had chances to score more... but in the end, that's how it is," he lamented. He added that the team needed to shoot more, but crucially, shoot on target. The 31-year-old also paid credit to Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who made several key saves, noting that "today, Bayern's best player was the goalkeeper."
The result leaves Real Madrid with a difficult task in Germany next week, needing to overturn a one-goal deficit to advance to the semi-finals. Rüdiger's comments highlight a rare moment of visible frustration within a squad that has been remarkably resilient this season under Carlo Ancelotti. The defender, who has been a pillar of consistency at the heart of Madrid's defence since his free transfer from Chelsea in 2022, is known for his passionate and committed displays.
His critique comes amid a high-stakes period for the club, which is also closing in on the La Liga title. The focus will now shift to mounting a comeback at the Allianz Arena. Rüdiger's leadership and defensive solidity will be paramount if Real Madrid are to progress, with the experienced defender likely to be tasked with containing Bayern's attacking threats once more. The public airing of these tactical concerns is unusual for the typically controlled environment at Madrid, underscoring the disappointment felt after a subpar performance in a major European fixture.
