Antonio Rudiger will remain at Real Madrid for the 2026-27 season, the club confirmed through reports in Diario AS on Saturday. The agreement comes despite earlier speculation linking the 33-year-old defender with a potential move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, and even a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.
Rudiger endured a disrupted first half of the season due to injury, with concerns over his arthritic knees persisting. However, he ultimately re-established himself as a regular starter for Los Blancos, displacing Dean Huijsen, who joined the club last summer, and making 26 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal. His ability to regain his place in the starting eleven proved crucial in his contract negotiations.
As per club policy, Real Madrid only offer one-year contract extensions to players over the age of 33. Rudiger initially sought a two-year deal, but ultimately accepted the one-year extension after understanding the club’s position. This decision underscores his commitment to remaining with the Spanish giants despite other opportunities.
Currently, only three central defenders have their places secured for next season: Rudiger, Eder Militao, and Huijsen. Militao’s recent injury, which will rule him out of the World Cup, further solidifies Rudiger’s importance to the squad. The future of Raul Asencio remains uncertain, while David Alaba is set to depart upon the expiration of his contract. Reports suggest that Real Madrid have been offered Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol as a potential reinforcement, indicating the club is still actively exploring options to strengthen their defensive line. Rudiger will likely face renewed competition for a starting spot next season.
