Olympique de Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli has spoken candidly about a difficult season for the club, hinting at potential issues both on and off the pitch. In a lengthy Instagram post published on Sunday, Rulli described the campaign as a “rollercoaster” and addressed what he perceived as inaccurate reporting regarding the team’s dynamics.
While stopping short of confirming his future, the Argentina international acknowledged the team successfully secured European qualification for next season, reaching the Europa League. However, he also made clear this fell short of ambitions for a second consecutive Champions League berth. Rulli’s message suggests underlying tensions within the squad and a disconnect between the team and supporters, stating that some reports were “very far from reality” and created “unnecessary noise.”
Rulli arrived at Marseille in the summer of 2022 from Villarreal, initially on loan before making the move permanent. He quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, playing a key role in their Champions League qualification the previous season. His form during the most recent campaign, however, was subject to scrutiny as Marseille struggled for consistency.
The 31-year-old is currently expected to join up with the Argentina national team for international duty, potentially including participation in the upcoming Copa America. His Instagram post concluded with a hope for improvement next season, stating that the club is “unstoppable” when everyone is working in the same direction. The message has fueled speculation regarding his potential departure from the Stade Vélodrome, though no concrete offers have been reported at this time. Marseille will likely be assessing their goalkeeping options ahead of the new season following Rulli’s comments and uncertain future.
