Ismael Saibari’s World Cup campaign is in jeopardy after sustaining a potential hamstring injury during Morocco’s recent match against Canada, according to reports emerging from the national team’s training camp.
The 21-year-old forward, recently signed by Bayern Munich for a reported fee of €55 million, is suspected to have suffered a hamstring strain early in the game against Canada, potentially ending his participation in the tournament.
Saibari has been a key player for Morocco thus far, having scored three goals in the competition. His absence would represent a significant blow to the team’s hopes. Mohamed Ouahbi, the Morocco manager, is currently assessing replacement options for the upcoming match against France, with Suofiane Rahimi emerging as the frontrunner.
Rahimi, 30, came on as a substitute for Saibari against Canada and scored the third goal, adding to a previous goal against Haiti where he also replaced Saibari. He is one of seven players in the Morocco squad born in the country, having come through the youth ranks at Raja Casablanca. His story is particularly poignant, fulfilling the dream of his father, Youari, a goalkeeper whose career was cut short by a car accident.
The Bayern Munich signing was a significant step in Saibari’s career, having previously played for Raja Casablanca. The move to the Bundesliga represents a substantial increase in competition and exposure for the young player. Should the injury prove serious, it will delay his integration into the Bayern Munich squad.
Rahimi’s potential inclusion would offer Morocco a seasoned alternative in attack, though Saibari’s dynamic presence will be missed. The extent of the injury will be crucial in determining the team’s tactical approach for the remainder of the tournament.
