Ismaël Saibari is attracting significant attention at the ongoing World Cup, having scored three goals in as many matches for Morocco. This comes after a period of scrutiny six months prior, stemming from an incident during the Africa Cup of Nations final involving Édouard Mendy, for which he later apologized and was initially suspended, then cleared. Saibari is now a key figure in the Moroccan attack, helping them progress beyond their semi-final appearance in the previous tournament.
Saibari’s rise has been remarkable, culminating in being named Eredivisie Player of the Year after a successful spell with PSV Eindhoven, where he has won three domestic titles. He also secured a title at the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations and the most recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament. According to reports, Bayern Munich are keenly observing the player’s performances, potentially making a move for him in the near future, having already faced him in the Champions League this season.
Born in Spain and raised near Barcelona, Saibari moved to Belgium at the age of seven, playing for several clubs including Willebroek, Beerschot, Anderlecht, Mechelen, and Genk before joining PSV at 18. Despite being eligible to represent Belgium, he consistently chose to represent Morocco, making his debut with the U15 national team in 2016 and progressing through the age groups. He is one of the youngest players to commit to Morocco at a young age, alongside defender Chadi Riad.
Nasser Larguet, a former technical director of the Moroccan Football Federation, emphasized the importance of players choosing Morocco with complete conviction. Larguet stated that Saibari expressed a strong desire to play for Morocco, a crucial factor in his selection. Saibari's versatility has been a key asset for both club and country, playing in multiple positions including left wing, attacking midfield, and recently as a central striker under the current national team coach. He has impressed with his technique, work rate, and ability to create opportunities, scoring five goals in seven appearances under the new manager.
Saibari’s commitment to Morocco and his impressive form suggest he is poised for a move to a top European league, with Bayern Munich emerging as a strong contender. His ability to adapt to different roles and his dedication to the national team make him a valuable asset, and his continued development could see him become a key player for both club and country for years to come.
