Allan Saint-Maximin is set to join Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC after his contract with Lens expired, according to L’Équipe. The move brings an end to a short, yet impactful, six-month spell with the French club. Saint-Maximin arrived at Lens following their Coupe de France victory, but will now embark on a new chapter in the United States.
Lens had hoped to retain the winger, particularly after recently losing captain Adrien Thomasson and manager Pierre Sage, but were unable to agree to terms on a contract extension. Saint-Maximin’s departure represents another significant change for the club as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Charlotte FC will reportedly designate Saint-Maximin as a ‘designated player’, allowing them to sign him despite his salary exceeding the league’s salary cap. This designation is reserved for a limited number of players on each MLS roster, highlighting the club’s ambition in securing his services. Saint-Maximin will become one of three players on the Charlotte roster whose wages fall outside the standard MLS guidelines.
Prior to joining Lens, Saint-Maximin spent several years in Ligue 1 with Nice, where he established himself as a dynamic and exciting winger. He earned a reputation for his dribbling ability and attacking flair, attracting attention from clubs across Europe. While his time at Lens was brief, he quickly became a fan favorite, contributing to their success in the Coupe de France. His previous stint outside of France did not yield consistent results, making this move to the MLS a chance to reignite his career.
The transfer provides Saint-Maximin with a new challenge in a growing league and offers Charlotte FC a potentially game-changing attacking talent. This move could elevate Charlotte’s profile within MLS and provide a boost to their on-field performance.
