Mohamed Salah has given preliminary approval to a transfer to the Saudi Pro League, though the move is contingent on three conditions being met, according to reports in Saudi publication Marebpress. The Liverpool legend is set to leave Anfield this summer, one year before his contract expires, following a season marked by both on-field struggles and personal tragedy for the club.
Salah’s departure comes after a difficult season for Liverpool, finishing fifth in the Premier League and resulting in the dismissal of manager Arne Slot. Disagreements between Salah and Slot are believed to have been a significant factor in the Egyptian’s decision to seek a new club. Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has suggested that had Slot been sacked earlier, Salah may have reconsidered leaving.
The 33-year-old is reportedly seeking a financial package commensurate with his status and marketing value, a contract lasting two or three seasons for stability, and assurances that he will join a club with a serious ambition to compete for major titles. TEAMtalk previously reported that any deal would likely include a substantial contract and an ambassadorial role to promote football in Saudi Arabia.
Lovren has been vocal in his criticism of the treatment Salah received this season, particularly from pundits like Jamie Carragher, accusing them of unfairly targeting the forward. He claims the relationship between Salah and Slot deteriorated significantly, contrasting with the strong bond he shared with previous manager Jurgen Klopp. Lovren also believes Salah lacked sufficient support from his teammates during a challenging period.
Liverpool are now focused on finding a replacement for Salah, with Yan Diomande identified as their primary target. The fallout from Salah's exit continues to be debated among fans and pundits, but the club is moving forward with its rebuilding plans. This move, if finalized, would mark the end of a nine-year spell at Anfield for one of the club’s most iconic players.
