Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has begun discussions with the agent of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, according to reports in Turkey.
The Egypt international is expected to leave Anfield this summer after a nine-year spell with the club. While Salah signed a two-year contract extension in 2025, a perceived lack of alignment with incoming manager Arne Slot and a recent downturn in form have reportedly led to a mutual agreement to part ways.
Salah will be a free agent at the end of the season, with MLS and the Saudi Pro League previously identified as potential destinations. San Diego FC in the United States have been touted as a likely landing spot, while several Saudi Arabian clubs, including Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, and Al-Qadsiah, have also expressed interest. However, a move to Fenerbahce presents a potential opportunity to remain in contention for Champions League football.
European clubs have largely been considered unlikely suitors due to Salah’s expected wage demands, which would stretch the financial capabilities of most. A move to Turkey, however, could be feasible with clubs like Galatasaray and Fenerbahce demonstrating a willingness to invest heavily in players.
Hakan Safi, owner of Safi Holding, has reportedly pledged to sign Salah should he win the upcoming Fenerbahce presidential election. He has already contacted Ramy Abbas, Salah’s agent, with an offer of a net salary of €20 million per season. This figure, while lower than potential offers from Saudi Arabia, is bolstered by the prospect of Champions League qualification.
Fenerbahce currently sit second in the Turkish Super Lig, guaranteeing a spot in the Champions League qualifying rounds. However, their position is not secure, with Galatasaray currently leading the table and Trabzonspor also within striking distance. A shock defeat for Galatasaray against Samsunspor last weekend has kept Fenerbahce’s title hopes alive, though their own form will be crucial in the final two matches of the season. The club recently sacked their sporting director and head coach in preparation for a potential overhaul under a new president.
The outcome of the Fenerbahce presidential election, scheduled for the first week of June, will be pivotal in determining whether Salah considers a move to Istanbul.
