Sampdoria’s search for a new manager has hit another roadblock with Fabio Pecchia no longer a candidate for the role, according to reports in Italy. The Serie A club had identified Pecchia as a potential replacement, but negotiations have broken down due to complications surrounding his salary and the composition of his backroom staff.
This setback follows a previous rejection from Davide Possanzini, leaving Sampdoria continuing their hunt for a new head coach. Reports indicate that Pecchia’s financial demands – a reported €600,000 per season until 2027 with Parma – proved to be a significant obstacle. Beyond the salary, disagreements also arose regarding the structure and personnel of his desired coaching team, mirroring issues encountered in discussions with Possanzini.
Pecchia has built a reputation as a specialist in securing promotions, most recently with Parma. He guided the club back to Serie B at the end of the 2022-23 season, a feat that initially attracted Sampdoria’s attention as they look to rebuild following their own relegation from Serie A. He previously managed Cremonese and Virtus Entella, consistently demonstrating an ability to improve teams and achieve positive results in challenging circumstances.
Sampdoria were relegated from Serie A last season, finishing bottom of the table with just 19 points. The club is undergoing significant changes as they attempt to navigate life in Serie B, and finding the right manager is considered crucial to their immediate future. The difficulties in attracting their initial targets highlight the challenges facing the club as they seek to establish a competitive squad and rebuild their reputation.
The failed pursuit of Pecchia leaves Sampdoria back at square one in their managerial search, potentially forcing them to broaden their scope and consider alternative candidates. The club will need to act swiftly to appoint a new coach before the start of the new season to allow adequate preparation and team building. This prolonged search could impact their pre-season plans and ability to effectively compete in Serie B.
