Jadon Sancho is set to be released by Manchester United this summer, bringing an end to a disappointing five-year spell at Old Trafford. The club confirmed the decision, with the 26-year-old’s contract expiring and no option for a further 12 months being taken up. Sancho joined United in 2021 for a fee of €85 million from Borussia Dortmund, but failed to consistently deliver on expectations.
During his time with the Red Devils, Sancho managed 12 goals and six assists across all competitions, a return considered significantly below par given his price tag. His spell was also marred by disciplinary issues, a public falling out with former manager Erik ten Hag, and a period of absence to address his mental health. Loan spells at Chelsea, a return to Dortmund, and most recently Aston Villa, did not revitalize his form.
Despite a promising start to his loan at Aston Villa, contributing one goal and three assists, Sancho struggled to make a significant impact. A previous loan spell at Chelsea also proved unsuccessful, with the club opting to pay a penalty fee to avoid a permanent transfer in 2025. His brief return to Dortmund offered fleeting glimpses of his former self, including a notable Champions League performance against PSG, but ultimately failed to convince.
Sancho’s previous reported €18 million annual salary is unlikely to be matched by any potential suitors, given his recent performances. While a third return to Borussia Dortmund has been speculated, Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy believes the move would be ill-advised, suggesting the club has attempted to recapture past successes with limited results. SciSports’ Career Advice tool identifies Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund as Sancho’s two most suitable clubs, scoring 89 and 84 respectively, suggesting that if he cannot thrive at these locations, his future prospects are concerning. Opportunities in leagues like Portugal and France may offer a chance to rebuild away from the spotlight.
