Santi Cazorla has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 41, bringing an end to a career spanning over two decades. The Spanish midfielder confirmed his decision via a post on Instagram, marking the end of his second spell with Real Oviedo, the club where he began his journey.
Cazorla’s career included notable spells with Arsenal, Villarreal, and Málaga, as well as a stint with Al-Sadd in Qatar and a return to his hometown club, Oviedo. He was a key figure for Arsenal between 2012 and 2018, known for his technical skill, creativity, and ability to score spectacular goals. He made 180 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 29 goals in all competitions.
At international level, Cazorla represented Spain 81 times, playing a significant role in their successes at Euro 2008 and Euro 2012. Despite competing for a midfield spot with established stars such as Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Cesc Fàbregas, and Xabi Alonso, he consistently contributed to La Roja’s triumphs. His versatility and ability to dictate play made him a valuable asset for the national team.
Cazorla chose to return to Real Oviedo in 2023, aiming to contribute to the club’s ambitions. He experienced both promotion to La Liga and subsequent relegation during his three seasons with the Carbayones, playing 87 matches and scoring 3 goals. His return was seen as a boost for the club and a testament to his loyalty to his roots. The club confirmed his departure with gratitude for his service. His final season saw Oviedo relegated back to Liga 2 after a single season in the top flight.
Cazorla’s retirement marks the end of an era for Spanish football, leaving behind a legacy of skill, passion, and dedication. He joins former teammates Iniesta and Xavi, who also pursued later stages of their careers outside of Spain.
