Sassuolo have triggered their option to permanently sign goalkeeper Arijanet Muric from Ipswich Town for a fee of €7 million, the club confirmed on Saturday. The move comes less than twenty days after Muric publicly stated his desire to leave the Italian club.
The decision has been described as controversial, as Muric had previously indicated his time with Sassuolo was over. Fabio Grosso, the club’s manager, acknowledged Muric’s expressed wishes, stating that individuals must take responsibility for their decisions. However, the club has proceeded with the purchase from the English side.
Despite the player’s apparent reluctance, Sassuolo may be motivated by potential future profit. Muric enjoyed a strong season in Serie A, establishing himself as one of the league’s top goalkeepers, and several clubs have reportedly expressed interest in signing him. The club’s relatively low initial investment of €7 million could allow them to secure a significant transfer fee should they choose to sell Muric in the coming transfer windows.
Sassuolo released a statement confirming the acquisition: “U.S. Sassuolo Calcio announces that it has exercised the right to acquire the sporting performances of the player Arijanet Muric definitively from Ipswich Town.” The Kosovan international joined Sassuolo on loan during the summer of 2023 following his time in the Premier League. He made 32 appearances for the club, totaling 2880 minutes of playing time.
Given Muric’s stated desire to move elsewhere, the most likely scenario remains a resale, potentially to a club outside of Italy. The club’s decision to secure his rights now provides them with greater control over his future and the opportunity to maximize their return on investment.
