SC Bastia handed partial stadium closure following fan incidents
SC Bastia will play the remainder of their Ligue 2 season with a partially closed stadium following disciplinary action from the French Professional Football League (LFP). According to reports from L'Équipe, the East stand of the Stade Armand-Cesari in Furiani will be closed until the end of June as a sanction for incidents during a match against Boulogne in mid-March, where home supporters attempted to enter the official dressing rooms.
The sanction deals a significant blow to the Corsican club, which is currently bottom of Ligue 2 and three points from the relegation playoff place. Bastia will host crucial fixtures against Saint-Étienne and Le Mans, plus any potential relegation playoff, without a full complement of supporters. The club has already been forced to play one 'home' match at a neutral venue in Rodez, drawing 1-1 with Amiens last month.
The disciplinary action stems from serious crowd trouble that marred Bastia's 1-0 home defeat to Boulogne. The LFP's commission de discipline deemed the invasion attempt towards the dressing rooms a severe breach of security protocols. This partial stadium closure adds to a turbulent season on and off the pitch for the Sporting Club, which has not won a league match since mid-January.
The atmosphere at a reduced-capacity Furiani will present a new challenge for a squad desperately fighting for survival. The loss of vocal home support, particularly from a dedicated stand, removes a traditional advantage during the decisive final stretch of the campaign. Bastia's form has already been fragile, with the team struggling to convert performances into results over a prolonged winless run.
This punishment follows a pattern of disciplinary issues for the club in recent years, with previous incidents leading to fines and closed-door matches. The latest sanction underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the LFP in managing stadium security and fan conduct. For Bastia, the immediate focus is on overcoming this setback to mount a final push to avoid relegation to the Championnat National, France's third tier.
The club has yet to issue an official public statement on the sanction, but the decision is reported to be final. The coming weeks will test the resilience of the players and the remaining supporters as they navigate a difficult run-in under constrained circumstances.
