FC Schalke 04 are poised to complete the permanent signing of goalkeeper Kevin Müller from 1.FC Heidenheim, according to a report from Kicker.de. The move comes after a successful loan spell with the Royal Blues during the latter half of last season, where Müller made four appearances and recorded one clean sheet.
The 35-year-old’s contract with Heidenheim runs until 2027, but the club are not expected to present significant resistance to his departure given his eleven years of service and established position. Kicker.de state that while the contract extension has not yet been officially confirmed, it is considered a formality. The expected fee for the transfer has not been disclosed, but is not anticipated to be substantial.
Müller joined Heidenheim in 2013 and became a key figure for the club, helping them achieve promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history last season. However, he found himself largely as a backup option behind other goalkeepers at Heidenheim, leading to the loan move to Schalke in January. He quickly established himself as a reliable presence in goal for the Gelsenkirchen side, demonstrating his experience and shot-stopping ability.
Schalke earned promotion back to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2022/23 season, and are rebuilding their squad ahead of their return to the top flight. Securing Müller’s services provides stability and experience in a crucial position. The move allows Schalke to solidify their goalkeeping options and provides Müller with the opportunity to continue playing regular first-team football in the Bundesliga. This transfer represents a low-risk, high-reward acquisition for Schalke as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.
