RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager has publicly stated his desire to play in the Premier League as his contract with the Bundesliga club nears its expiration. The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Bournemouth, where he would reunite with former coach Marco Rose. Schlager revealed his ambitions during an appearance on the German podcast “Man kennt sich, man schätzt sich”, as reported by Bild.
Schlager acknowledged that his playing options are becoming more limited as his contract winds down, but emphasized his openness to opportunities in top European leagues. He specifically highlighted the Premier League’s current trajectory and intensity as particularly appealing. “Of course the Premier League is a goal, but I’d say there are also other top-five leagues, all of them have a certain appeal,” Schlager said. He further commented on the league’s growing prominence, stating it is “the league everything is developing towards, and where the most intense football is being played.”
Schlager joined RB Leipzig in 2022 from Wolfsburg, quickly establishing himself as a key component in midfield. He has made 107 appearances for the club across all competitions, contributing both defensively and in possession. Prior to his time at Leipzig, Schlager spent four seasons with Wolfsburg, developing a reputation as a combative and technically proficient midfielder. He has also earned eight caps for the Austrian national team.
Bournemouth, currently managed by Marco Rose, are seeking to bolster their midfield options ahead of next season. Rose previously managed Schlager at RB Leipzig, where the pair enjoyed a successful working relationship. The potential arrival of Schlager would provide Rose with a familiar and experienced player capable of dictating play and offering defensive solidity. With his contract expiring this summer, Schlager would be available on a free transfer, representing a cost-effective acquisition for the Premier League club. This move could provide Bournemouth with a much-needed boost in quality as they look to consolidate their position in the top flight.
