Germany centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck has stated his full concentration is on the upcoming World Cup, despite ongoing transfer speculation linking him with Real Madrid. The 26-year-old has been a key figure for Borussia Dortmund, making 161 appearances and scoring 11 goals for the club.
Schlotterbeck’s consistent performances have reportedly attracted the attention of Real Madrid, who are potentially in the market for defensive reinforcements. Reports suggest the player has a release clause in his contract, which runs until 2031, in the region of €50-60 million (£43.1m to £53.7m). However, Schlotterbeck insists he is not distracted by the rumours.
Speaking to German publication BILD, Schlotterbeck said he is aware of the media coverage but reiterated his current focus. “Yes, of course you get something like that through the media,” he stated. “But basically I already said that a few weeks ago, the complete focus is now on the World Cup, on the first game.” He referenced the importance of a strong start to the tournament, drawing on experiences from the previous World Cup in Qatar.
Germany are in Group E alongside Curacao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador, beginning their campaign against Curacao on Sunday. Julian Nagelsmann’s side will be looking to improve on their disappointing performances in the last two World Cups, having been eliminated in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022. Schlotterbeck will be hoping to play a significant role in helping Germany reach the knockout stages for the first time since winning the tournament in 2014.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have officially announced the return of Jose Mourinho as their head coach on a three-year contract. The club paid Benfica a reported €15 million (£12.9m) to secure his services, making him one of the most expensive managerial appointments in football history. Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 and is tasked with revitalizing a team that has endured a trophy drought over the past two seasons. The club are also reportedly close to signing Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer from Liverpool and Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for a fee of €20 million (£17.3m).
