Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the remainder of the World Cup after sustaining a significant ankle injury during the team’s 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast, Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old was substituted at halftime during the match, replaced by Antonio Rudiger, and subsequent medical examinations revealed a torn medial collateral ligament in his left ankle. Dortmund stated that Schlotterbeck is expected to undergo surgery and will be sidelined for several months.
Schlotterbeck had become a key figure under Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, starting both of their Group E matches thus far, including the win against Ivory Coast and the preceding 7-1 victory over Curacao, where he also scored a goal. His absence represents a blow to Nagelsmann’s defensive options as Germany continue their campaign.
Prior to the injury, Schlotterbeck had enjoyed a strong start to the season with Borussia Dortmund, establishing himself as a regular starter in the Bundesliga. He joined Dortmund from SC Freiburg in the summer of 2022 and quickly became an integral part of their backline, known for his aerial ability and passing range.
The injury also throws into question potential future transfer interest in the player. According to reports, Real Madrid had been monitoring Schlotterbeck’s progress, but this long-term layoff could alter those plans. Dortmund’s statement expressed support for Schlotterbeck during his recovery, stating, “We are at your side, Schlotti!”
With Schlotterbeck unavailable, Nagelsmann is likely to turn to Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah as his central defensive pairing, with Thiaw as a potential backup. The injury further complicates Germany’s situation in a competitive Group E, as they look to secure qualification for the knockout stages.
