VfB Stuttgart have confirmed that Dennis Seimen will be their first-choice goalkeeper beginning with the 2026/27 season, following a successful loan spell with SC Paderborn. The 20-year-old will return to Stuttgart and immediately step into the starting role, replacing Alexander Nübel who is set to return to his parent club, Bayern Munich, after a three-year loan period.
Seimen played a key role in Paderborn’s promotion campaign, gaining valuable experience as a regular starter in the 2. Bundesliga. His performances have convinced Stuttgart’s hierarchy that he is ready to compete at the highest level, despite his relatively young age. Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth stated in an interview with DPA that the decision was unanimous within the club, describing Seimen as “not an experiment” and expressing full confidence in his ability to succeed.
Wohlgemuth highlighted Seimen’s rapid adaptation to new challenges throughout his career, citing his positive impact on Germany’s youth national teams, as well as his performances in the 3. Liga and more recently, the 2. Bundesliga. This consistent ability to quickly adjust to higher levels of competition was a significant factor in Stuttgart’s decision to promote him to the number one spot. The club clearly views Seimen as a long-term solution in goal.
To further bolster the goalkeeping department, Stuttgart have also signed Marius Funk from Energie Cottbus. Veteran Fabian Bredlow will remain with the squad, providing experience and competition, while 18-year-old Fabian Hellstern recently signed a contract extension, indicating the club’s commitment to developing young talent within the position. The arrival of Funk and retention of Bredlow and Hellstern suggest Stuttgart are building a strong and competitive goalkeeping unit for the future. This move signals a clear shift in Stuttgart's goalkeeping strategy, placing faith in youth and homegrown talent.
Nübel’s departure leaves a void, but Stuttgart appear confident that Seimen is the ideal replacement, offering both potential and a proven track record of success at each level he’s played. The club’s proactive approach to strengthening the position suggests they are prepared for a smooth transition and are aiming for continued stability between the posts.
