The Serie A fixture between Roma and Lazio on Sunday, 17 May is set to be moved to a 12:30 kick-off time, a decision that could have significant ramifications for the league's European qualification race. While not yet officially confirmed, Serie A president Ezio Simonelli stated that the scheduling change is the only viable option after ruling out evening and afternoon slots.
Speaking at a press conference for the 'Road to Zero' environmental initiative, Simonelli explained the rationale. "It doesn't seem like there are too many options," he said, according to reports. "It cannot be played in the evening because the police headquarters does not allow it for public order reasons. In the afternoon, there would be a clash with the final of the Internazionali tennis tournament, so that is not advisable. That leaves only the possibility of 12:30. Moving it to Monday? That is a hypothesis I don't think is feasible."
The rescheduling, if formalized, means multiple other crucial matches will be played simultaneously at 12:30 on the same day. This affects the final round of the season, where several European places remain undecided. Matches involving Juventus, Como, and Atalanta are also expected to be scheduled for that time slot, as they are directly involved in the race for Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League positions.
The congestion could also extend to Napoli and Milan, should their results in the preceding two matchdays fail to secure a mathematical advantage over the chasing pack. This creates a scenario where the fates of multiple clubs will be decided concurrently, adding dramatic tension to the final day but also complicating the planning for clubs and fans. The move is primarily driven by external logistical pressures rather than sporting considerations.
For Roma, the scheduling presents a unique challenge. José Mourinho's side will now have to navigate the intense pressure of a local derby, a match of immense emotional significance, at an unusual hour, while knowing that their rivals for European spots are playing at the exact same moment. This removes any potential advantage of playing later and reacting to other results, forcing every team to focus solely on their own task.
The decision underscores the complex balancing act faced by league officials, who must navigate public order concerns, clashes with other major sporting events, and the integrity of the competition. The 12:30 kick-off time is often unpopular with players and coaches, who cite disrupted preparation routines. The ripple effect from this one fixture change highlights how a single adjustment in the tightly-woven Serie A calendar can impact the strategic landscape for nearly half a dozen clubs in the most critical moment of the season.
