Sevilla have announced the departure of Sporting Director Antonio Cordon, effective May 31st, as the club prepares for a change in ownership and potential further restructuring. The decision comes after one year in the role, despite Cordon having two years remaining on his contract, and was reached through a mutual agreement with the club according to reports. Matteo Moretto of Relevo adds that Cordon has agreed to forgo any remaining compensation on his contract to facilitate the separation.
This move signals the beginning of a period of transition for Sevilla, who recently secured their La Liga status for another season with one match remaining. A takeover bid led by former player Sergio Ramos has reportedly been agreed with the current majority shareholders, though details surrounding the deal remain limited. Earlier speculation suggested Ramos might attempt to bring back former sporting director Monchi, but Monchi has since taken the position at Espanyol.
The timing of Cordon’s exit also casts doubt on the future of manager Luis Garcia Plaza. Following a narrow defeat to Real Madrid which nevertheless confirmed Sevilla’s safety in La Liga, Garcia Plaza expressed uncertainty about his position. He stated to Diario AS that he was unaware of the club’s plans, and highlighted the disruption caused by ongoing takeover negotiations, suggesting he needs to feel valued to remain at the club.
Garcia Plaza currently has a contract for the upcoming season, but the new ownership group may wish to install their own manager. The club have not yet mentioned potential replacements, and it appears decisions regarding the managerial position will be postponed until the takeover is finalized. Cordon’s departure and the uncertainty surrounding Garcia Plaza represent significant changes for Sevilla as they look to rebuild following a challenging season. The new ownership, led by Ramos, will likely have a significant impact on the club’s direction moving forward.
These changes could lead to a significant overhaul of the playing squad in the summer transfer window, as the new owners look to reshape the team in their image.
