Slot admits Liverpool must sell to buy as major squad rebuild looms
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has publicly acknowledged the club will need to sell players to finance a significant summer rebuild, conceding his squad is nearing the end of a successful cycle. The admission follows a season that will end without silverware after Tuesday's Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain confirmed a 4-0 aggregate defeat.
Speaking after the 2-0 loss at Anfield, Slot outlined the financial reality facing the club ahead of a pivotal transfer window. "We have to sell to buy," Slot told reporters. "We are losing some players on a free transfer. It is a big challenge in the summer, but the club has shown that this model works." The Dutchman referenced the departures of key figures, confirming that Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are set to leave, following Trent Alexander-Arnold's earlier exit.
The club's self-sustaining model, enforced by owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG), saw significant investment last summer with a net spend offset by major sales. According to reports, Liverpool spent approximately £440 million but recouped a large portion through the departures of players including Jarrel Quansah, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez. Slot indicated a similar process lies ahead. "That is the challenge that we had last season, we had to sell 10-11 players to sign five to six," he said.
Slot framed the situation as a natural transition for a club that enjoyed immense success under his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp. "We are a club in transition," he explained. "A club always has certain cycles with certain players. A lot of them that were so successful for the club have already left or are leaving." He expressed faith in the existing model, stating, "this club have shown so many times that this model works and with this model we can be successful."
Despite the disappointing end to the season, Slot sought to offer encouragement to supporters, pointing to the performance against PSG as evidence of underlying potential. He praised his players' effort and the role of the Anfield crowd, suggesting the future could be bright if the recruitment challenges are met. "The future looks very good, especially if we can sign players after good players leaving this summer," he added.
In other news related to Liverpool's planning, the serious injury sustained by striker Hugo Ekitike during the PSG match is reported to have forced a rethink of the club's attacking targets. According to TEAMtalk sources, the injury has triggered plans for at least two new forward additions. Meanwhile, progress is being made on a new contract for midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, with the club aiming to secure his future amid reported interest from Real Madrid.
The scale of the impending overhaul is significant, with several established stars departing and the need to refresh an ageing core. Slot's candid comments set the stage for a busy and strategically crucial summer at Anfield, where player sales will directly dictate the club's ability to compete in the market for replacements.
