Liverpool manager Arne Slot is facing increasing pressure and is in danger of losing his job at Anfield, according to reports from James Pearce of The Athletic. The situation has deteriorated following a disappointing season for the Reds, marked by 20 losses across all competitions.
Slot arrived at Liverpool with high expectations after a successful first season, inheriting a squad recently bolstered by £440 million in new signings while also seeing established players depart. Despite the investment, Liverpool’s performance has been significantly below par, leading to growing discontent among supporters and concerns from club owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
While initial reports suggested Slot would be given the opportunity to continue next season, FSG reportedly wanted to see improvement in the remaining games. However, a recent 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa has seemingly intensified the scrutiny on the Dutch manager. Pearce reports that the tide is turning against Slot, with the Dutchman’s assurances of future improvement sounding increasingly unconvincing.
Several pundits have also voiced their concerns. Danny Murphy believes the fans have largely turned against Slot, stating that 20 losses and poor performances represent a “really bad drop-off.” He suggested that failing to secure Champions League football would almost certainly result in Slot’s dismissal. Jermaine Pennant went further, calling for FSG to sack Slot immediately, citing the unacceptable number of losses compared to promoted teams.
Further fueling the debate, Mohamed Salah reportedly made a damning statement about the team's struggles, which has been interpreted as a lack of confidence in Slot’s management. This sentiment was echoed by Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, who stated that supporters remain unconvinced by what they have seen.
Interestingly, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has offered a dissenting opinion, suggesting Slot would be unlucky to lose his job and should be given time to rebuild the squad. Slot himself has acknowledged the need for squad restructuring, hinting at potential player sales to fund new acquisitions. The future of the manager remains uncertain, but the pressure is mounting as Liverpool navigate a critical summer.
