Liverpool’s hierarchy are facing increasing pressure to reconsider Arne Slot’s position as manager, with calls growing for the club to reignite their pursuit of Xabi Alonso. The situation has escalated following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday, a result that has intensified discontent among supporters.
Despite the club publicly backing Slot to lead the team into the 2026-27 season, reports suggest a growing unease within the fanbase. The Athletic’s James Pearce described a ‘mutinous mood’ at Anfield, noting that dissent towards Slot hadn’t been this pronounced since the final days of Roy Hodgson’s tenure in 2010. A specific point of contention was Slot’s second-half substitution of Rio Ngumoha for Alexander Isak, which drew audible boos from the crowd.
The draw with Chelsea highlighted familiar issues for Liverpool, including defensive vulnerabilities that allowed Enzo Fernandez to score. This performance came after a mixed season for Slot, who joined from Feyenoord last summer with expectations of revitalising the team following Jurgen Klopp’s departure. While the intention was to build a new era, the team has struggled to consistently deliver performances that meet the club’s high standards.
Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder, has been linked with several top clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City. While he has not actively sought a move, his availability has prompted renewed discussion about whether he would be a more suitable appointment than Slot. Fabrizio Romano maintains that Liverpool have not made contact with Alonso or his representatives this year, but the possibility of a change in direction remains.
Pearce suggests that if Slot remains in charge and Liverpool’s form doesn’t improve at the start of next season, the situation could quickly become untenable. He also cautions that the calibre of available managers may be lower if a change is made mid-season, as Alonso is likely to have secured a new position elsewhere. Despite the speculation, Romano insists Liverpool are currently committed to Slot, stating that no contact has been made with other managers.
