Somali Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan Makes History with 2026 FIFA World Cup Appointment
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has made history by being selected as one of the 52 center referees for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first Somali official ever appointed for the tournament. The list of 52 center referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 video match officials for the tournament, to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, was officially unveiled by FIFA on Thursday.
Artan's selection marks a significant milestone for Somali football. While the national team, the Ocean Stars, have never qualified for a World Cup, Artan has risen to the pinnacle of the officiating world. He has been a FIFA-listed referee since 2018 and was named the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) Referee of the Year in 2025. Somali President Hassan Mohamud praised Artan, stating he is "an inspiration for the new generation of Somalis."
His appointment is a landmark for Somali football and for African refereeing. Artan, who officiates in the Somali Premier League, is recognized as one of Africa's top officials. His regular assignments in major CAF competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the CAF Champions League, have showcased his talent on the continental stage. This consistent high-level performance on the African stage made him a strong candidate for the global tournament.
The 2026 World Cup, the first to be hosted by three nations, will see Artan and his fellow officials manage matches across 16 cities in North America. Artan's selection, confirmed by FIFA's official announcement, is seen as a logical progression for one of Africa's most respected referees. His journey from the Somali Premier League to the world's biggest football stage is a historic achievement for his nation and a significant moment for the development of football in Somalia.
