Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer has stated he believes he has at least three years of top-level football remaining, while also discussing some of his most memorable saves in a recent interview with RSI Sport. The Switzerland international joined Inter permanently last year and has become a key figure in the team’s Serie A title-winning campaign.
Sommer recounted the dramatic penalty shootout against France at Euro 2021, where he saved Kylian Mbappé’s spot-kick. He revealed a moment of uncertainty before the save, checking with the referees to ensure he hadn’t encroached off his line. Sommer emphasized the belief within the Swiss team after Ricardo Seferovic’s goal to make it 3-2, shifting the momentum of the match.
When asked about Inter’s Champions League clash with Barcelona, Sommer identified his save from Lamine Yamal in the 113th minute as the more difficult of his two crucial stops. He explained that Yamal’s shot was closer to the post and more acutely angled than the earlier save. Sommer also highlighted the captivating nature of the match, praising Marco Acerbi’s goal and acknowledging that it was a first Champions League final for many Inter players.
Sommer admitted he wasn’t anticipating Yamal’s tendency to shoot across goal, noting that the young Barcelona winger subsequently hit the post with a shot aimed at the opposite side moments later. The interview also touched on broader topics such as criticism of his height and his views on penalty shootouts and VAR.
Sommer’s comments regarding his future suggest he is committed to continuing his career at Inter for the foreseeable future. At 35 years old, he continues to demonstrate a high level of performance, and his experience has been invaluable to Simone Inzaghi’s side. His continued presence provides stability and quality in a crucial position, solidifying Inter’s position as a dominant force in Italian football.
