Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti held a press conference ahead of the team’s first pre-season friendly against Basel on July 18th, outlining his vision for the upcoming season and addressing the club’s transfer activity. Spalletti began by offering condolences to former Juventus employee Baldini following a personal loss.
He spoke of finding a squad aware of last season’s shortcomings, and motivated to improve. According to Spalletti, the team understands what it needs to do differently, though he acknowledged that work remains to address existing weaknesses. He admitted to feeling “unease” reflecting on the previous campaign, emphasizing the importance of a different approach this time around.
Spalletti stressed the need for Juventus to be proactive and decisive, stating the club “is not made to stay in the wake” of its rivals. He reiterated the importance of improving the squad, acknowledging that several positions need strengthening, but cautioned that the upcoming World Cup could complicate transfer timings. He described the current market as being in a “cooling break,” but affirmed that the club is well-organized and clear on its objectives.
The manager indicated that the primary goal for the new season is to compete for Champions League qualification and challenge for a high league finish, though he stopped short of discussing a title challenge, stating they are “quite distant” from that ambition at this stage. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the same level of performance and quality as last season, while avoiding past mistakes.
Regarding returning loanees, Spalletti emphasized the value of re-integrating players who have gained experience elsewhere. He provided an update on Paul Pogba, stating the midfielder is undergoing a “differentiated work plan” to address the issues that hampered him last season. He also addressed the situation surrounding Dusan Vlahovic, stating he had completed his technical assessment of the player, leaving the financial aspects to the club’s directors.
Spalletti praised the potential of young player Kenan Yildiz, confirming he will be integrated back into the group following a period of rest. New signings Timothy Celik and Archie Ekhator were also discussed, with Spalletti highlighting Celik’s character and Ekhator’s potential as a modern striker. He acknowledged the possibility of player departures, given last season’s results, and that the club is prepared for potential offers.
Finally, Spalletti spoke positively about his relationship with former director Comolli, despite his departure, and expressed confidence in the current leadership of Carnevali and Massara, believing they have the capabilities to strengthen the squad and achieve the club’s ambitions.
