Juventus manager Massimiliano Spalletti has stated that a major overhaul of the squad is “not possible” despite identifying issues with the team’s consistency and mentality. The comments came after a narrow 1-0 victory over Lecce on Sunday, a match where Juventus struggled to capitalize despite an early goal from Dusan Vlahovic and having two further goals disallowed for offside.
Spalletti, speaking to Sky Sport after the match, highlighted a recurring pattern within the team’s performances. He described periods of dominance followed by “superficiality” and a loss of focus, leading to unforced errors and a precarious position in games. He lamented the team’s inability to maintain concentration and character throughout the full 90 minutes, noting missed opportunities stemming from poor decision-making.
The manager’s assessment extended to the composition of the squad itself. While acknowledging potential improvements through the transfer market, Spalletti firmly dismissed the idea of replacing a significant portion of the current roster. He stated that suggestions of needing to change 18 players were unrealistic, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a core group and building upon existing foundations. He pointed to previous spending by the club and the need for “targeted and correct” acquisitions.
Spalletti specifically praised Vlahovic’s physical presence and goal-scoring ability, contrasting it with other forward options. He acknowledged that while David also scores goals, he lacks the same physical robustness. The manager stressed the importance of having a “physical terminal” capable of winning duels and providing a consistent threat. He also emphasized the need for players with a strong mentality, describing a desire for more players with a “real face of a bastard” – a willingness to fight and impose themselves on the game.
Further comments to DAZN revealed Spalletti’s frustration with the team’s inability to close out matches, labeling it a “problemone” (big problem) rather than a “problemino” (small problem). He stressed the need for a more proactive approach to goal-scoring and a greater determination to win from the opening whistle. He also reiterated his belief in the existing squad, stating that many of the current players will remain key figures in the club’s future, despite the need for improvement.
Spalletti also touched on the club’s long-term vision, referencing comments made by John Elkann regarding building a solid foundation for the future. He emphasized the importance of professionalism, dedication, and a clear understanding of the demands of playing for Juventus. The manager’s statements suggest a focus on cultivating a stronger mentality within the existing squad, rather than pursuing a radical overhaul in the transfer market.
