Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti is set to meet with club president John Elkann this week to discuss his future following a disappointing end to the season, according to reports in Italy. The meeting comes after Juventus’ recent defeat to Fiorentina effectively ended their hopes of Champions League qualification and saw them fall into contention for a Europa League place.
Spalletti accepted the Juventus position with the expectation that the team could reach the Champions League round of 16 and qualify for next season’s competition, goals that have now been missed alongside failing to lift the Coppa Italia. While the club had previously indicated a desire to extend Spalletti’s contract to 2028, the manager has indicated he needs to evaluate his own performance and discuss potential changes with the ownership. “I need to do an analysis on myself, because I need to bring different things than these,” Spalletti stated after the match against Fiorentina.
The club’s struggles extend beyond on-field performance, with concerns raised about the planning and execution of the team’s strategy. The lack of impact from January signings David and Openda in crucial matches has been highlighted, as has a perceived lack of leadership within the squad. These issues have prompted an internal review of the work of Giovanni Comolli, who has overseen the club’s technical area and transfer activity in the past year.
Reports suggest that few of the investments made under Comolli’s leadership have yielded positive results. The collapse in form has raised questions about the overall direction of the club and the effectiveness of its recent restructuring efforts. Spalletti acknowledged the difficult season, stating, “It was a great season in my period,” but the looming conversation with Elkann suggests significant changes may be considered as Juventus looks to rebuild and return to the top of Serie A. The outcome of this meeting will likely dictate the club’s strategy for the upcoming transfer window and beyond.
