Spurs insider claims only Archie Gray safe in summer squad overhaul
Tottenham Hotspur's squad is playing for their futures under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, with only young star Archie Gray considered exempt from a potential summer clear-out, according to a club analyst. The claim comes as Spurs battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League, sitting 17th and just one point above the drop zone with seven games remaining.
Speaking to Tottenham News, analyst John Wenham suggested that the impending arrival of De Zerbi on a five-year contract has shifted the dynamic at the club. "All the players are now playing for their future at the club," Wenham said. "The only one that should be exempt from that is Archie Gray, because he’s performed exceptionally well while the rest of the players have really underperformed."
The 20-year-old Gray, who can operate in midfield or at right-back, has been a rare bright spot in a dismal campaign that has seen Thomas Frank sacked and interim successor Igor Tudor depart by mutual consent. Gray's consistent performances have reportedly attracted interest from Liverpool, though Tottenham are understood to be resistant to selling their prized academy graduate unless relegation to the Championship forces their hand.
Should the club preserve its top-flight status, a significant rebuild is anticipated under De Zerbi. However, a number of key players could depart regardless of the division. Defender Cristian Romero is reportedly a target for Spanish giants Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona, while Pedro Porro has long been admired by Manchester City. Loanee forward Randal Kolo Muani is expected to return to Paris Saint-Germain, and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has been linked with a return to Serie A with Inter Milan.
Other players face uncertain futures. Central defender Micky van de Ven is wanted by Liverpool and Manchester United, though Spurs aim to keep him if they stay up. The club also hopes to retain the services of Lucas Bergvall, Destiny Udogie, and Djed Spence. The situations of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Mohammed Kudus are more complex due to significant injury lay-offs that have hampered their seasons and the team's form. A relegation would likely necessitate the sale of that trio, albeit at a reduced valuation.
The immediate focus remains on securing Premier League survival, starting with a crucial trip to Sunderland. De Zerbi's task is to galvanise a squad now acutely aware that their performances in the final stretch will directly impact their personal futures at Tottenham Hotspur. The summer transfer window promises to be one of major change in north London, with Gray seemingly the sole untouchable asset in a squad braced for upheaval.
