Tottenham Hotspur have been encouraged to empower manager Robert De Zerbi with significant influence over their transfer strategy this summer. The call comes as Spurs have already been active in the window, securing Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively, and also bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the club has submitted a bid of approximately €92 million (£80m) for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, though Sky Sports reports that the offer was rejected. This demonstrates a willingness from the Tottenham board to invest heavily in De Zerbi’s project.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes granting De Zerbi a substantial say in recruitment is crucial, suggesting a 70/30 split in favour of the manager. Jenas, who made over 200 appearances for the club, pointed to a recent statement from the chairman outlining the club’s faith in De Zerbi’s five-year project as justification for providing him with greater control. He argued that if the club truly believes in the manager, they should allow him to build the team he envisions, even if initial results are not immediate.
De Zerbi himself has publicly stated his intention to construct a ‘new team’ this summer, acknowledging the need for improvements despite identifying a core group of 10-12 players he believes are capable of contributing. He emphasized the importance of adding “first level players” to alleviate the consistent pressure and late-season struggles the club has experienced. De Zerbi also clarified his desire for a collaborative approach, involving the sporting director, scouting team, and CEO, but ultimately aiming to build a squad aligned with his vision.
The early moves in the transfer window suggest Tottenham are prepared to back their manager financially, setting the stage for a busy and potentially transformative summer at the North London club.
