Manchester United have been urged by club legend Jaap Stam to explore a swap deal involving Rafael Leao of AC Milan and Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona. Stam believes the exchange could benefit both clubs this summer, though cautioned a thorough assessment of player mentality is crucial.
Leao joined Milan from Sporting CP in 2019 and initially flourished, playing a key role in their run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2022-23. However, his form has dipped in recent seasons, leading to reports in Gazzetta dello Sport that Milan are open to selling the Portuguese winger at the end of the current campaign.
Rashford, meanwhile, joined Barcelona on a season-long loan last summer after falling out of favour at Old Trafford. He has contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions, helping Hansi Flick’s side secure a second consecutive La Liga title. While Barcelona have an option to purchase Rashford for €30 million (£26m), The Athletic reports the club are now hesitant to exercise that clause due to ongoing financial concerns.
Speaking to ComeOn, via The Metro, Stam stated, “Maybe a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work. Leao is also a good player… I think he is a player that should be on the list of targets for Manchester United.” He further emphasized the importance of considering a player’s mentality and long-term impact on the squad, referencing potential dressing room disruption caused by players not receiving regular playing time.
Leao has scored nine goals in 28 Serie A appearances this season, but has not found the net since March. Rashford has been a valuable asset for Barcelona, particularly with Raphinha hampered by injuries, but his future remains uncertain. United are reportedly prioritizing strengthening their midfield following Casemiro’s impending departure at the end of his contract, according to BBC Sport.
Despite Leao’s goalscoring record, United currently possess a wealth of attacking options in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, and Patrick Dorgu, suggesting a move for the Milan winger isn’t an immediate necessity. The potential for a swap deal hinges on Barcelona’s decision regarding Rashford and Milan’s willingness to part with Leao.
