Aleksandar Stankovic has returned to Inter Milan after a year-long loan spell with Club Brugge, but his future at the club remains uncertain, according to reports in Italy. The 20-year-old midfielder impressed during his time in Belgium, winning the Jupiler Pro League title and earning the league’s ‘Talent of the Season’ award, prompting interest from clubs across Europe.
Stankovic, the son of former Inter player Dejan Stankovic, spent last season gaining valuable experience in Belgium after a previous loan at Lucerne, a move encouraged by Federico Dimarco who had also played in Switzerland. Inter retained a repurchase option in the deal with Brugge, which they have now exercised, bringing the young Serb back to Milan and signing him to a contract through 2031. The club originally paid 23 million euros for Stankovic eight days ago, following an initial 10 million euro outlay by Brugge in 2025, resulting in a net expenditure of 13 million euros.
The Serie A side now face a decision: integrate Stankovic into the first team squad or potentially capitalize on his rising value. The club estimates his current worth at around 40 million euros, a figure that could prove tempting given the need for financial stability and potential player sales. Stankovic is already familiar with Inter’s youth system, having been coached by Cristian Chivu during his development.
Stankovic will have the opportunity to prove his worth during the team’s ten-day training camp in Donaueschingen, Germany, from July 16th to 26th. This period will be crucial for the young player as he attempts to convince Chivu, and the Inter coaching staff, of his ability to contribute to the first team. Several clubs from the English Premier League and Germany are reportedly monitoring his situation, potentially ready to make a move if Inter decide to sell. His situation mirrors that of Pio Esposito, another young Inter prospect who recently impressed and secured his place with the club.
