Strasbourg are poised to complete a deal for Famalicao defender Ibrahima Ba, with the 21-year-old Senegalese centre-back already undergoing a medical in Alsace. Ba missed training with Famalicao on Thursday morning, according to L’Équipe, indicating his move to the Ligue 1 club is imminent.
The transfer is reported to be worth €15 million, excluding bonuses, a significant outlay for Strasbourg, who were recently sanctioned by UEFA. Ba’s desire to reunite with former coach Hugo Oliveira is understood to have been a key factor in his decision, with the manager having reportedly recommended the player to the Strasbourg board.
Ba has emerged as a promising talent in Portugal, establishing himself as a regular starter for Famalicao. He made 30 appearances in the Portuguese Primeira Liga last season, demonstrating his physicality and aerial ability. His height – listed at 1.91m – makes him a commanding presence in the heart of defence.
Strasbourg have been active in the transfer market this summer, already bringing in Piekutowski, Sousa, Brantlind and Del Blanco as they look to strengthen their squad. The addition of Ba addresses a clear need for defensive reinforcement following a season where they conceded 48 goals in Ligue 1. The club will be hoping the investment pays dividends as they aim to improve on their 14th place finish last season.
Benfica Lisbonne were also reportedly interested in Ba, but the player’s preference for a move to Strasbourg, driven by his relationship with Oliveira, proved decisive. Oliveira was appointed as Strasbourg’s manager in March 2024, tasked with stabilising the club and building a competitive team. Securing Ba’s signature represents a significant coup for the manager and a statement of intent from the club.
The substantial fee paid for Ba highlights Strasbourg’s ambition, despite their recent financial difficulties. The club will need to carefully manage their finances moving forward, but the acquisition of a young, highly-rated centre-back is a positive step in their rebuilding process. Ba’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to Strasbourg’s defensive solidity and overall competitiveness.
